2006 Season - Prizegiving Trophies

The 2006 Prizegiving function was held at the Clubrooms, 50 Phillip St., Johnsonville, Wellington on Saturday 16th September (from 7pm).

The Club Patron, Hon. Peter Dunne MP, attended the function and handed over the main club awards.
Also in attendance was the new Capital Soccer General Manager, Keith Palmer.
The function was conducted by Club President, Grant Shields.

Note: Ray Hickling Trophy has not been awarded since the end of the 2003 season (when the Mens Capital 6 team folded).

Obituary (August 2006) - Kathleen Kelly, the wife of the late Pat Kelly and mother of long-time club member Therese Lloyd and father-in-law of club life member Colin Lloyd.
(Pat Kelly was a past chairman of Newlands Soccer Club and the first chairman of the Wellington Womens Soccer Association. The Kelly Cup, played for by women club teams in Wellington since 1973, is named after Pat.)

Obituary (September 2006) - Ron Mullis, the father of past Committee member Bill Mullis (of the Men's Capital 11 team) passed away last Wednesday 13th September 2006.

Community Award (August 2005) made to life member Colin Lloyd. Presentation at the North Wellington Volunteer Awards (as for life member Don Stone in 2004) made to Colin Lloyd by local MP (and club patron) Peter Dunne. Recognition of Colin's efforts in the club administration over many years.

Life Members (update)
- Don & Dulcie Stone, unable to attend games this season but remain keen followers of the Men's Premier team performance. They reside in Tawa.
- Jimmy Herd, who has had both legs amputated over the past year, has also been unable to attend games this season but keeps informed of the club's progress.

Individual & Team achievements in 2006.

Darren Lee - 100 league appearances for Mens Premier team, the 21st player to achieve this for the club since it achieved Central League status in 1974. (Darren has now made 109 league appearances)

Scott Barber & Scott Moran, Mens Capital 4, both achieved their 100th career league goal for the 'Blair-Wright' team (Barber now has 109, Moran has 101). This team was formed in 1989. Also this season the team scored its 1000th league goal, in their opening match (scored by Grant Shields).

Matt Cantwell (Mens Masters 1) won the club's Golden Boot award for the 5th successive season. He was also the top goal-scorer for the Capital 3 (Reserve) team.

Former club players, Aroon Clansey & Julia Baldwin (Womens Premier team - 2004 season) were selected as part of the 21-player squad in the New Zealand Women's Under-20 team. Aroon was an international player for the North Wellington club in 2004 (Secondary schoolgirls team).
The New Zealand team participated in the World Championships held in Russia in August 2006, playing group games against Australia (lost 3-0, St. Petersburg), hosts Russia (lost 3-2, St. Petersburg) and Brazil (drew 0-0, Moscow). The 0-0 draw was the 2nd time in New Zealand soccer history that an international team has achieved a result at a World Cup event (the first was in the 1999 Men's under-17, win v Poland, held in Auckland).
Aroon played as goalkeeper (full games) against Australia, Russia and Brazil.
Julia did not play against Australia, Russia or Brazil.

Former club players, Mark Jamieson & Tony Jamieson (Mens Premier team - 2000 season) are still part of the Cook Islands team (they represented the North Wellington club in the 2000 season). This season they played for the Miramar Rangers and Wairarapa United clubs respectively.

Mens Premier team (Chatham Cup) - 1st time that the Club had played the eventual cup winners (1st round, lost 9-0 v Western Suburbs). This was also the worst loss for the Club in the Chatham Cup.

Acknowledgements

Honours Board - has been updated recently (September 2006), thanks to Bruce Polyanszky (with assistance from Shelley Tildesley).

Nada Bakery (Johnsonville) - provided food to the Clubrooms during the 2006 season (thanks to club member, Steven Lynd (Mens Capital 4)).

Printwork - for the Club during the 2006 season (Business cards, function tickets), thanks to club member Shelley Tildesley (Womens Division 4B).

Bar Manager (Di Waaka) for her work during the 2006 season.

Golf Day - Committee member Michael O'Connor (Mens Capital 4) is organising this event. It is scheduled for Friday 3rd November 2006 at Wainuiomata Golf Club. Further details to be advised.

Annual General Meeting - due to be held at the Clubrooms, 50 Phillip Street, Johnsonville on Wednesday 8th November 2006 at 7.00pm. Financial accounts, season reports from the Club President and Premier team coaches and Club General Business will be on the agenda. Discussion of a joint-club & Council proposal on relocation of clubroom facility (on Alex Moore Park). A new Committee for the 2007 season will also be elected. All club members urged to attend.

'State of Origin' presentation - Social club game was played on Saturday 9th September 2006 at Alex Moore Park with the shield presented by the event founder (club member Craig Hopkins) to the winning captain Kevin Chafe from 'Country' team. ('Town' 2 'Country' 4)

The Clubrooms were partially decorated courtesy of Gavin Underhill (and the New Zealand Ballet company). The dress theme for the function was 'Hawaiian night'.
Attendance during the evening was around 110 (88 in 2005) people.
