North Wellington AFC - 'State of Origin' 2008

This event was first held on Saturday 10th September 2005 (as a replacement for the Club Day competition held in 2003 & 2004) following a proposal put to the North Wellington AFC Committee by 2005 Men's Premier team player/coach Craig Hopkins who put up a trophy for a 'State of Origin' event.
Since 2005 it has been on an annual basis at the conclusion of the playing season between club members (and invited guests) from the Men's and Women's club teams.
For the 2008 season the North Wellington Association Football Club (NWAFC) Committee will again hold this event on Saturday 6th September 2008. (Final score - TOWN 0 COUNTRY 3)

Details are as follows:

2008 'State of Origin' event proposal - Held at Alex Moore Park, Johnsonville on the No. 1 (middle) ground on Saturday 6th September 2008.
Kick-off is at 2.30pm (Changed from 2pm, as Men's Capital 3 final league game was scheduled at 12.30pm).

There will be 2 teams involved - 'Town' & 'Country'.

Eligibility for each team shall be:
Players must have made at least one league appearance for a club (NWAFC) team during the current season.
(The organiser reserves the right to allow 'guest' players to participate in order to make up the team numbers.)
Players will be divided into each team ('Town' and 'Country') by virtue of their place of birth.
'Town' is defined as the greater Wellington city area (northern boundary being the Porirua bridge and the eastern boundary being the Rimutaka Hill).
Any player born outside of the 'Town' area is defined as 'Country'.
From the eligible & available players, teams will be selected by the organiser of the 2008 'State of Origin' event, committee member Warwick Smith.

Cancellation/Reserve Day - Should the weather and/or grounds be unsuitable, the 'State of Origin' event will be postponed until the Reserve Day (Sunday 7th September 2008, 2pm). Participants/team contacts will be advised as soon as possible and the club website will be updated accordingly.

The rules of the NWAFC 2008 'State of Origin' event are as follows:

Rule 1 - Spirit & Attitude - The most important rule for all players to follow. This is a social event. Accordingly the game is to be played in a sporting spirit. This is an opportunity for club members to participate in a 'bit of a kickaround'. No foul play/language will be tolerated.

Rule 2 - Rules & Teams - Normal rules apply, except as stated below, with rolling substitutions permitted (when the ball is out of play) subject to maintaining the criterion listed below.
- Teams will be of eleven players per side on field. Each team may have a maximum of six substitutes. (This may be altered if both captains agree)
- Both teams should at all times field the same number of women players. (This may be altered if both captains agree)
- Referee & Captains - to be appointed by the organiser of the 2008 'State of Origin' event, committee member Warwick Smith.
- Sin Bin / Sending-offs - referee has full discretion to use sin-bin (specific time) or send-off players. Sent-off players will be subject to organisers decision as to their future involvement.

Rule 3 - Duration & Result - This event is a one-off game played for 45 minutes each-way (referee may add time for time-wasting or injury). The team scoring the most goals will be determined as the winner.
- If at the end of normal time (90 minutes) the scores are tied, then an 'American-style' penalty shoot-out will be used to determine the winner. The format is as follows:
- 5 players from each team are to be nominated by the team captain to take part. (The players taking part can only be selected from the team on the field at the conclusion of normal time).
- A coin toss is held to determine which team goes first. The first player (or 'attacker'), from the team electing to go first, starts with the ball on the half-way line with only the opposing team goalkeeper defending the goal. The goalkeeper must start on the goal-line. Both attacker and goalkeeper are subject to the normal rules of the game.
- Once the referee has indicated play is on, the attacker has 20 seconds in which to score.
- If the goalkeeper secures possession, the ball leaves the field of play, the attacker commits a foul, or the 20 seconds expires before a goal is scored then play ceases and no goal is recorded.
- If a goal is scored by the attacker or the goalkeeper commits a foul then a goal is recorded.
- A player (or 'attacker') from the second team then follows the same procedure. This alternate sequence between teams continues until all 5 players have had one effort each, unless one team has an insurmountable lead.
- If after both teams have used their 5 players the scores are level, then sudden-death (one additional player per team) is used from the remaining players. If still level after these players have had one effort each, then a second effort (still under sudden-death rules) continues using any order of players. This repeats until a winner is found.
- The goalkeeper may be substituted at any time during the penalty shootout.
Rule 4 - Goals & Goalscorers - All goals scored count as one goal.

Rule 5 - Disputes - Any disputes regarding the interpretation or practice of these rules and any necessary disciplinary matters will be settled by the organiser of the 2008 'State of Origin' event, committee member Warwick Smith. All participants in choosing to participate in the 'State of Origin' event will be subject to these rules. Any decision made by the organisers in this regard will be deemed final.

Rule 6 - After-Match - To be held at the Clubrooms at the conclusion of the game. The losing team from the previous season will bring one plate of food (per player). Attendance shall be compulsory.
(For 2008, this will be the 'Town' team, they lost 5-3 in 2007.)

The presentation of the 'State of Origin' trophy will be made at the North Wellington AFC End of Season function held on Saturday 13th September 2008 at the Clubrooms, 50 Phillip St., Johnsonville.

2008 Match Result: Town (0) 0 Country (1) 3
Match Conditions: Cool, overcast but became fine into second half. Ground was slightly slippery and followed an earlier Capital 3 league game. (Match played as 12-a-side, for the final 15 minutes it was 15-a-side)

Notes:

Goalkeepers changed at halftime, for Town (William Bridge 1st half, Steven Lynd 5 mins (replaced after 'harbour-bridge' effort to concede goal!), then Gareth Elmey & Robert Ewing shared remainder of 2nd half), for Country (Blair Kingsbury 1st half, Paul Waters 2nd half 30 mins, then Leigh Clements).
3rd consecutive win for the Country team, goals to Thompson and Clements scored from close range and Poultney squeezing a shot in under Lynd from 12 metres. Town played some constructive passing football in midfield but the final delivery or pass was poor, the cloest efforts for Town came from Joe Harris with an early 2nd half header cleared off the goal-line and later in the 2nd half Gareth Elmey had a shot from the edge of the penalty area blocked on the goal-line by Peter White.
Referee Corey Wright (Dave's son) unsuccessfully called full-time 20 minutes early - he was replaced shortly afterwards. No free-kicks needed to be awarded until midway second-half.
At the after-match, the player of game for the 'Country' team was awarded to Leigh Harrison, Womens Division 1. 'Country' captain Leigh Clements will receive the trophy on prizegiving night 13th September.
