North Wellington AFC - 'State of Origin' 2005

Latest news - the Committee of the North Wellington Association Football Club (NWAFC) is not able to hold a Club Day competition at the conclusion of the 2005 season (as done in 2003 & 2004).
However it has approved the proposal put forward by Mens Premier team player/coach Craig Hopkins who has offered to put up a trophy for a 'State of Origin' event. Details are as follows:

2005 'State of Origin' event proposal - To be held at Alex Moore Park, Johnsonville on the No. 1 (middle) ground on Saturday 10th September 2005. Kick-off is at 2pm.

There will be 2 teams involved - 'Town' & 'Country'.

Eligibility for each team shall be:
Players must have made at least one league appearance for a club (North Wellington Association Football Club) team during the current season.
(The organisers reserve the right to allow 'guest' players to participate in order to make up the team numbers.)
Players will be divided into each team ('Town' and 'Country') by virtue of their place of birth.
'Town' is defined as the greater Wellington city area (northern boundary being the Porirua bridge and the eastern boundary being the Rimutaka Hill).
Any player born outside of the 'Town' area is defined as 'Country'.
From the eligible & available players, teams will be selected by the organisers of the 2005 'State of Origin' event, committee member Warwick Smith & Mens Premier team player/coach Craig Hopkins.

Cancellation/Reserve Day - Should the weather and/or grounds be unsuitable, the 'State of Origin' event will be cancelled and participants/team contacts advised as soon as possible. There is no reserve day.

The rules of the NWAFC 2005 'State of Origin' event are as follows:

Rule 1 - Spirit & Attitude - The most important rule for all players to follow. This is a social event. Accordingly the game is to be played in a sporting spirit. This is an opportunity for club members to participate in a 'bit of a kickaround'. No foul play/language will be tolerated.

Rule 2 - Rules & Teams - Normal rules apply, except as stated below, with rolling substitutions permitted (when the ball is out of play) subject to maintaining the criterion listed below.
- Teams will be of eleven players per side on field. Each team may have a maximum of six substitutes.
- Both teams should at all times field the same number of women players. (This may be altered if both captains agree).
- Referee & Captains - to be appointed by the organisers of the 2005 'State of Origin' event, committee member Warwick Smith & Mens Premier team player/coach Craig Hopkins.
- Sin Bin / Sending-offs - referee has full discretion to use sin-bin (specific time) or send-off players. Sent-off players will be subject to organisers decision as to their future involvement.

Rule 3 - Duration & Result - This event is a one-off game played for 45 minutes each-way (referee may add time for time-wasting or injury). The team scoring the most goals will be determined as the winner.
- If at the end of normal time (90 minutes) the scores are tied, then an 'American-style' penalty shoot-out will be used to determine the winner. The format is as follows:
- 7 players from each team are to be nominated by the team captain to take part. (These players can only be selected from the team on the field at the conclusion of normal time).
- A coin toss is held to determine which team goes first.
- The first player (or 'attacker'), from the team electing to go first, starts with the ball on the half-way line with only the opposing team goalkeeper defending the goal. The goalkeeper must start on the goal-line. Both attacker and goalkeeper are subject to the normal rules of the game.
- Once the referee has indicated play is on, the attacker has 20 seconds in which to score.
- If the goalkeeper secures possession, the ball leaves the field of play, the attacker commits a foul, or the 20 seconds expires before a goal is scored then play ceases and no goal is recorded.
- If a goal is scored by the attacker or the goalkeeper commits a foul then a goal is recorded.
- A player (or 'attacker') from the second team then follows the same procedure. This alternate sequence between teams continues until all 7 players have had one effort each, unless one team has an insurmountable lead.
- If after both teams have used their 7 players the scores are level, then sudden-death (one additional player per team) is used from the remaining pool of 4 players. If still level after these 4 players then the rotation starts again from the first player, still under sudden-death rules.
- The goalkeeper may be substituted at any time during the penalty shootout for any of the other 10 outfield players.
Rule 4 - Goals & Goalscorers - All goals scored count as one goal.

Rule 5 - Disputes - Any disputes regarding the interpretation or practice of these rules and any necessary disciplinary matters will be settled by the organisers of the 2005 'State of Origin' event, committee member Warwick Smith & Mens Premier team player/coach Craig Hopkins. All participants in choosing to participate in the 'State of Origin' event will be subject to these rules. Any decision made by the organisers in this regard will be deemed final.

Rule 6 - After-Match - To be held at the Clubrooms at the conclusion of the game. The losing team from the previous season will bring one plate of food (per player). Attendance shall be compulsory.
(For 2005, being the first time that 'State of Origin' event is being played, the home side - designated to be 'Town' shall supply the one plate of food (per player).)

The presentation of the 'State of Origin' trophy was made at the North Wellington AFC End of Season function held on Saturday 17th September 2005 at the Clubrooms, 50 Phillip St., Johnsonville.

Match Conditions: Nice and fine - a great September day in Wellington.

Goalscorers:
Town (blue shirts) - Daniel Diggins, Scott Moran, Daniel Slieker, Matthew Caughley. (Scott Barber and Michael O'Connor took a half each in goal)
Country (claret shirts) - none. (Had plenty of corners for no result. Peter Roberts and Des Crosby both missed penalties at 0-0 & 0-4)
